The truck economics
Ready-mix runs $155–200 per yard delivered in most markets, plus a flat delivery charge — and short-load fees ($50–150) under ~4 yards because the truck hauls 10 economically. The crossover math: bags cost ~$12–14 per cubic yard-equivalent in material but 2+ hours of mixing per yard — the point where your Saturday becomes the real currency.
The finish-material line
Forms (2x lumber or form boards), reinforcement (mesh or rebar), control-joint tools, and sealer typically add $100–250 to any pour. The sealer is the one people skip: it slows the water loss that causes surface cracking, and it costs $30. Curing compound on a hot-day pour is the difference between a slab and a cracked slab.
Scheduling like a pro
Trucks pour on your schedule (book 3–7 days out), and the crew needs everything staged before the drum turns: forms set and braced, reinforcement down, tools on site, help recruited. A 3-yard pour with two people is comfortable; solo is a workout with a timer running. Concrete does not wait for coffee.
